PCMS Group Chief Product Officer Martyn Osborne Previews The Big Retail Show

We are now just one day away from the NRF 2018 Big Retail Show. And while the PCMS team has been putting the finishing touches to our interactive show stands, Group Chief Product Officer Martyn Osborne has been planning his own busy show itinerary. Here’s what he has to say about the New York expo.

Why are you going to the Big Retail Show?

Simply put, it’s a great gathering for our industry. We’re expecting more than 35,000 people will attend, many of which are our customers or partners. In previous years the expo has been a great way to showcase our solutions and to learn more about the innovations and expectations that are taking hold in our marketplace. Above all, the show promises ‘Big Names’ and ‘Big Ideas’ for retail. It rarely disappoints.

What are the big changes happening in retail today?

I’ve been working in retail for 30 years, and the industry is always changing – fast. Today, traditional High Street-based retailers are still reacting to competition from online only operations – not only in terms of offering multichannel but also in matching them for superior service and brand experience. In 2018, there’s two relentless drivers at work. The first is the need for increased efficiency – for example making the most of every square inch of store space, reducing unnecessary inventory spends and using software to instigate best practice in-store. Second is customer-centricity – highly-personal, hyper-convenient interactions. That means using Endless Aisle to never disappoint, and allowing customers to buy on their own terms, when, where and on what device they want.

What do you expect to be the main talking points at the show?

The Big Retail Show is something we’ve supported for many years and the quality of conversations is always high. Given there will be retailers there from 95 different countries, I’d expect to speak a lot about the ability to upscale fast – something PCMS excels in. Multi-format, multi-currency operations are also something we offer and I expect to have a few conversations about that. And of course the usual questions about software – will it be disruptive, how will I know it’ll cope, will it work with my existing infrastructure, what are the benefits etc.

What else are you looking forward to at the show?

Seeing our customers and spending some quality time learning more about their new challenges and aims. And hearing some great speakers, not only retailers, but press and investors. It’s often illuminating to hear from people who aren’t at the sharp end of software or customer-delivery – they can provide some useful objectivity that’s quite provocative. Another key focus for us is identifying disruptive technology and talent. We always keep an eye out for start-ups and incubator-type companies that will make great partners. And, aside from all of that, visiting New York! The show is in a great location in a great city.

Why should people visit the PCMS stand?

2017 was a fantastic and eventful year for PCMS. People who pop by our stand will soon see we’ve got a new look and new solutions, and an exciting new way to demonstrate how PCMS offers value at every step of the customer journey. We’re expecting a lot of interest in our VISION Commerce Suite software – not only in its core functionality but also some of the complementary wins, for example cash and inventory management. We can’t wait to talk more about it, and to host some fantastic retail teams on the stand.
