Price Manipulation

Price manipulation refers to any attempt to change or lower the price of a product at the point of sale from the recommended retail sale price. This may be achieved by discounting by a percentage or monetary value deduction.

PoS systems, apart from system generated discounts such as BOGOFs, allow for price overrides, reductions and various discount options e.g. HM Services, shopping centre discounts, manager's discretionary discount etc.

Unauthorised staff or employee discounts are a common problem and cashiers might regularly allow their friends and family to take advantage of their staff discount facility.

The significant challenge is to identify the dishonest activity amongst the genuine and necessary price changes required daily.
