Students With a Passion for Technology, Look No Further!
PCMS offers two distinct undergraduate placement opportunities aimed at both technical students who are keen to pursue a career in Software Development or Business/IT students looking for a career as a Business Analyst (BA).
Once the 12-month placement is completed, successful students will be considered for Graduate Software Developer/Graduate BA roles following their graduation!
Rory Adair, a current placement, sheds light on his experience as a student and how PCMS has taken him to new heights in his career.
“In March 2017, I received a phone call with an offer to come work for PCMS as a Software Development Placement, or as I explained to my football-mad gran, a 12-month deal on loan from De Montfort University. I was ecstatic to have finally found a company where I could gain experience working with large clients, at a place deep within the rapidly revolutionising world of retail technology. However, this initial excitement was also concurrent with feelings of doubt. How would I fit in at PCMS? Would I be good enough? Would the placement opportunity be rewarding?
The next 3 months before my July start-date flew by, and my doubts were alleviated all within the first few weeks at my new job. PCMS has seamlessly transitioned me from a carefree student lifestyle, to a business professional.
During the first six months, it was clear the team I was placed on had vast experience! They were always on-hand to help me out with my work, and answer any questions I had—ranging from Java related, to predictions on what’s going to happen next on Game of Thrones. Although my first 6-months in the tech industry was very enjoyable, my only complaint is that my team put me to shame at 9 rounds of ‘disc golf’ (I didn’t believe it was a sport either, until I witnessed my lead developer hurl a disc into a basket 300-yards away to give him 10 under par… seriously impressive).
Working at PCMS has offered everything to me in terms of experience. I’ve improved my programming skills, ability to work as part of any team in multiple roles, and increased my knowledge of all stages of software development. Rest assured, there was plenty of time for fun, especially during wonderful team lunches and Christmas Dinner dance-offs.
During my time with PCMS, I’ve often been given an opportunity to work in leadership roles. For example, I led meetings within the first 6-months of my placement, an experience I thought I would not gain when I simply applied to software development. Currently, I’m working as a Project Manager and it is my job to organise a team of the placement students to develop a PCMS application, that can be taken to career’s fairs to sign people up for a role with the company. A project like this might sound daunting, but I can assure you, with the amount of knowledge you pick up from working here—including PCMS’ development methodologies—it’s comparatively easy to how I would have attempted such a project before working at PCMS.
I implore anyone to come and experience a role with PCMS. It has been the most complete placement experience I could have hoped for and more.”
